The fight against breast cancer got a boost from the friends and family of Colleen Cherry, as the “Colleen’s Closet” group recently contributed $3,300 to the Hospital Foundation of Decatur County in honor of the daughter, mother, and friend that meant so much to the community. The funds will be designated for Decatur County Memorial Hospital’s Mammography Assistance Program, reported Bryan Robbins, Director of the Hospital Foundation.IMG_2158

The group raised the funds through generous donations in Colleen’s name, as well as the inaugural “Colleen Cherry 5k” fundraiser held Oct. 4. Husband Dave Cherry was happy to see the funds go to such a great cause, and shared his vision of the Colleen A. Cherry Cancer Association: “We’re extremely pleased to be supporting the Mammogram Assistance Program, and look forward to expanding beyond breast cancer to help those fighting the disease in other areas. Cancer is something that affects all aspects of life, and we’d like to help members of the community going through that process in as many ways as we can. Ideally this would include anything from paying for necessary prescriptions, providing transportation, to affording insurance premiums and/or specialty equipment.”
“Groups like these are very special–” shared Robbins: “They’ve come together out of love of a single person and a desire help others through her experience. The Hospital Foundation and DCMH sincerely appreciate the support they have provided the Mammogram Assistance Program, and are inspired by their devotion to helping the community.” Robbins highlighted the Hospital Foundation’s function as a vehicle to make an impact on the community’s health: “The initiative was obviously all theirs, and we were happy to be able to help them accomplish their initial goals. Just by talking to those involved with “Colleen’s Closet” you know that this energy will continue, and we look forward to working with them in the future. We both share a commitment to support the health of our neighbors, family and friends, and the more cooperation the better.”

Any profits Colleen’s Closet and the Cancer Association collect will be used to benefit Decatur County cancer patients and their families who may be struggling financially. The Hospital Foundation of Decatur County was organized in 1992 to support healthcare initiatives and develop funding for Decatur County Memorial Hospital and improve the quality of life in the community.
