Star Award Winner

DCMH proudly announces Joyce Westerman as the 2025 Q1 STAR Award Winner. Starting her DCMH career 36 years ago, Joyce is a Certified Pharmacy Technician within the DCMH Pharmacy. She attended Rite Aid Training School to become a Certified Pharmacy Technician. Before her current role, Joyce managed a prescription room and worked alongside pharmacy vendors. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Joyce currently resides in Sunman, Indiana, with her husband, Jim, of nearly 35 years. Additionally, she is a caregiver for her sister and has proudly served as a caregiver to many family members and friends. In her spare time, Joyce enjoys baking cakes and cookies, making floral arrangements, being in her garden, and playing Bingo with friends.

Joyce’s selflessness led to a well-deserved nomination for the STAR award. This winter, when Decatur County received many inches of snow, Joyce took the initiative to care for her coworkers through a simple, thoughtful gesture. Arriving early for her shift, she noticed night shift’s cars coated in a thick layer of snow. Without hesitation, Joyce cleared off eight of the nine vehicles, only missing one when she couldn’t quite reach the tallest vehicle. Joyce’s selfless act meant her coworkers came out to clean windshields following long overnight shifts. Her nominator thanked Joyce for her compassionate action, highlighting that caring for one another isn’t just limited to clinical care—it can also be in meaningful acts of service.

For others looking to succeed like Joyce, she cites some simple, but important advice, “Work with a smile and respect one another. Work together as a team to get the job done.” Joyce’s success at DCMH has been made possible by just being herself–someone who is loyal and genuinely cares for others. Joyce gives 101% to her work, and this is evident by her STAR nomination.
