Decatur County Memorial Hospital recently hosted a FEMA Center for Domestic Preparedness Health Sector Emergency Preparedness Course.

The Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP) is committed to having an emergency response community prepared for and capable of responding to all-hazards events. The CDP identifies, develops, tests, and delivers training to state, local, and tribal emergency response providers. They provide on-site and mobile training at the performance, management, and planning levels. They facilitate the delivery of training by the training partners of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The Center for Domestic Preparedness provides advanced, all-hazards training to approximately 50,000 emergency responders annually from state, local, tribal, and territorial governments, as well as the federal government, foreign governments, and private entities, as available. The scope of training includes preparedness, protection, and response.

The purpose of this course was to provide healthcare providers and suppliers with training in achieving the four core emergency preparedness elements outline in the September 2016 Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Emergency Preparedness Requirements for Medicare and Medicaid Participating Providers and Suppliers Rule.

Tammie Phillips, MSN, RN, DCMH Staff Development Coordinator, contributed in setting up this training. She explained the main goals for this course were to:

  • Understand specific healthcare provider and supplier emergency preparedness requirements
  • Develop knowledge and skill in achieving relevant emergency preparedness elements for the individual’s healthcare provider or supplier type.

Tammie added, “Disaster preparedness is important to our community therefore it is important to Decatur County Memorial Hospital. We coordinated this training with FEMA in an effort to bring our community partners to the table and ensure we have the tools to create the policies and procedures needed to provide the level of care our patients require during an emergency situation. This coordinated care between our partners is essential in meeting our goal of providing quality care close by.”
