GREENSBURG — Decatur County Memorial Hospital (DCMH) will be quite busy next Wednesday, June 28 with their annual Healthy Fair and a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Greensburg Elementary School.

DCMH says the Healthy Fair event offers free blood screenings, free Jimmy John’s lunch, health seminars with speakers, a bounce house and prizes. The Indiana Blood Center will be hosting the blood drive.

Last year, more than 600 guests attended the Healthy Fair. DCMH marketing coordinator Amy Shearer said that, with approximately 85 booths that will be providing health-related information to the public, they are expecting record-breaking attendance.

But why should people make their way out to the event? According to Shearer, it’s all about knowing what the community provides when it comes to your health.

“It’s a great opportunity for community members to take advantage of free blood screenings, and it’s perfect for someone who may not have insurance or for the elderly,” Shearer said. “It’s also a good opportunity to find out what is new at the hospital. It’s a great educational event.”

Shearer said that all age groups are welcome to attend the event. Again, the bounce house will make its return, but the fair will also offer free airbrush face painting, a balloon sculpture, and the “amazing maze.”

Rain will not be an issue this year as all activities will be held indoors.

Blood screening results will allow for DCMH to help patients choose a healthy plan for the future if there are any concerns, such as what physician they should visit.

“Our goal is to keep the community healthy,” said Shearer. “Through blood screenings, if we find what people need help with, we can help them find a physician to help with that need.”

Also, don’t forget to roll up your sleeves and donate blood when the Indiana Blood Center makes a stop in the Tree City next Wednesday.

According to the Indiana Blood Center, more than 100,000 people donate each year, and the Indiana Blood Center provides blood components to more than 60 hospitals throughout the state. The blood center also says that every two minutes, someone needs blood, and nearly all blood used for transfusions in the United States comes from donors. And one pint of blood can help up to three people.

Requirements to give blood including being at least 17 years of age and weighing at least 110 pounds. Those interested in donating must have also waited 56 days between previous donations, must be in good general health, and must not be pregnant. All are encouraged to eat a meal and drink plenty of water before their appointment. A photo ID is also required to donate.

Everyone who donates blood will also receive a free “Live Here, Give Here” t-shirt.

You can register prior to the blood drive by visiting DonorPoint.org.

The events will begin at 10 a.m. and will run until 2 p.m. at Greensburg Elementary School. For more information, DCMH can reached by calling 812-663-1228.
