Immediate Care Clinic

The DCMH Immediate Care Clinic is the top choice for care that is non-life threatening, but does require being seen today to ensure your medical conditions do not worsen. We see patients 4 months of age and older.

The Immediate Care Clinic offers:

  • No appointment necessary
  • Extended evening/weekend hours
  • Shorter waits than hospital emergency rooms

While the Immediate Care Clinic can quickly care for you, it should not replace your primary care provider or hospital emergency room. If you are unsure where to go for care, call 812-662-6450.

    Wait Times

Due to the nature of service being provided, wait times at our Immediate Care Clinic can be unpredictable. The severity of other patients’ sickness or injury differs making some wait times longer than others and drive the medical staff to triage patients based on their medical needs.

When visiting the immediate care facility, your typical wait time is less than an hour. In fact, 57% of immediate care patients experience an estimated wait time of less than 15 minutes. The following issues may affect how long your immediate care stay may last:

    • Lack of important documentation – photo ID and insurance information. Not having these items will delay your being seen.
    • Mondays, weekends, and holidays tend to be our busiest days and your wait time may be longer on these days. In addition, late-morning through mid-afternoon tend to be slower times, therefore your wait time may be less.
    • Some cases involve more time than others. Procedures such as stitching for lacerations, x-rays for possible broken bones, ear irrigations, etc. may take more time to complete than a simple exam or test.
    • Our Immediate Care Clinic has five treatment rooms. Although you may be the only person in the waiting room, there may be other patients already in rooms being seen by our provider.

    Emergency Rooms vs Immediate Care

The hospital’s emergency room has more resources and specialists at its disposal to treat severe problems than in an immediate care center.

At DCMH Immediate Care Clinic, you may be seen by a nurse practitioner or physician assistant. Nurse practitioners and physician assistants who work in our immediate care clinic are experienced in an immediate care setting and, if needed, are able to consult with a board-certified physician working alongside them. Often, our qualified and emergency-trained team can see you when your regular primary medical provider cannot.

In instances like heart attack or stroke, every minute counts. If you are experiencing signs or systems of any of the life-threatening conditions below, call 911 or head to the nearest ER.

      • Heart attack symptoms – chest pain, sweating, accompanying pain in your arm, neck or back
      • Stroke symptoms – sudden weakness, change in vision or trouble talking
      • Trouble breathing
      • Sudden severe pain
      • Allergic reactions with swelling of the airways
      • Head or back injuries
      • Loss of consciousness
      • Poisoning
      • Nonstop bleeding or vomiting
      • Severe dehydration
      • Drug overdose
      • Major bone breaks, burns, and cuts
      • IV fluids and medications to treat dehydration
      • Need for EKG, lab services and X-ray and imaging equipment such as ultrasound, CT or MRI scans

        Primary Medical Provider

While the DCMH Immediate Care Clinic can quickly care for you when you are sick or injured, it does not replace your Primary Medical Provider. Having a primary medical provider ensures someone is looking out for your future health – making certain your immunizations are current, preventing or controlling chronic conditions, managing medications, and discussing health screenings, like mammograms. Immediate care providers can help you establish further care, schedule a follow-up visit, and/or share the electronic record of your visit with your primary medical provider. This will assure your primary medical provider is informed of your test results and treatments.

        Call Ahead Limitations

Many health plans have nurse lines you can call if you are unsure about an injury or illness. However, in most incidents, it is difficult to assess injury or illness over the phone. If you contact the DCMH Immediate Care Clinic, we will most likely request you come in for a complete assessment.

        Flu, COVID, or Respiratory Symptoms

If you have any of these symptoms and your primary medical provider is not available, the DCMH Immediate Care Clinic can test for all of these illnesses. To avoid the misery and to protect yourself and others, it is best to get a flu shot, Vaccination or booster each year. However, if you do get the flu or COVID, you have approximately 48-hours to get medication that can help you feel better faster and potentially prevent serious complications.
