Decatur County Relay for Life has always been a popular event for this community. It is a way for people to come together and support one another, while taking a stand against Cancer.

Decatur County Memorial Hospital enjoys going one step further and hosting a Survivor Dinner every year the evening of the event. DCMH Cancer Care team invites all cancer survivors and their families for an evening of celebration and recognition before the teams begin to walk.

Nicolie Reed, DCMH Cancer Care Manager, stated, “The survivor dinner gives survivors the extra recognition they truly deserve. These survivors and their families have been through so much and it is our chance to give back and honor their fight. I enjoyed seeing our community come together Friday for such an important event. The American Cancer Society provides support and resources to our patients so it is our chance to contribute.”

The dinner included a free meal, free door prize drawing, and goodie bags given to all survivors who attended.

The DCMH Cancer Care Team raised $2,387 and collected an additional $2,250 in In-Kind Scholarships.

Relay for Life attendee Karen Meyerrose said, “This is why we do Relay for Life, to raise money for research to help find a cure. This dinner is a great way to honor those survivors that we love and care about.”

Karen was there to support her mother, a twenty-year cancer survivor.

DCMH would like to thank all staff members and physicians who volunteered, walked, or participated at Relay for Life. It was a very successful event and the team is looking forward to raising more money and participating again next year
