When Should You See a Gastroenterologist?

A referral from your provider may be required. If you are experiencing any of the below, it may be time to ask your primary care provider about a referral to a gastroenterologist:

  • Bloating or gas
  • Blood in stool or rectal bleeding
  • Bowel incontinence
  • Chronic or severe abdominal pain
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Family history of gastrointestinal diseases
  • Frequent heartburn or acid reflux
  • Indigestion
  • Persistent nausea or vomiting
  • Unexplained changes in bowel habits
  • Unexplained weight gain/loss
  • Yellowing of the skin/eyes (jaundice)
