DCMH History
1920s: Foundation and Early Years
Decatur County Memorial Hospital (DCMH) opened its doors on February 4, 1922, at its current location and was originally dedicated as a memorial to those who served in WWI. The goal was to provide essential healthcare services to the local community. The original hospital building, which is still in use, featured 16,000 square feet and cost $105,000, a significant investment for the time. Over the years, DCMH grew as the demand for healthcare increased, offering both inpatient and outpatient services to meet the needs of the expanding population.
1930s-1940s: Service During Challenging Times
Throughout the Great Depression and World War II, DCMH continued to serve the community, providing critical care in tough economic conditions. Despite financial hardships, the hospital maintained its commitment to offering quality medical care, and in the post-war years, the healthcare landscape began to evolve rapidly, laying the groundwork for future expansions.
1950s-1960s: Expansion and Modernization
By the 1950s, DCMH underwent its first major expansion to accommodate a growing patient population. The hospital added new wards, operating rooms, and office spaces. The 1960s saw continued growth, including the introduction of new technologies and improvements in patient care. This era marked the beginning of DCMH’s reputation for innovative healthcare in the region.
1970s: Major Expansion and Community Support
In the early 1970s, Decatur County Memorial Hospital underwent a significant renovation and expansion, with a $1.5 million investment in new facilities. This project, completed in 1974, included expanded pediatric and obstetric wards, as well as the introduction of a new Intensive Care Unit. The hospital’s capacity increased to 115 patients, and a focus on better patient care and specialized services became a top priority. By the end of the decade, the hospital was serving an increasingly diverse set of needs, from new clinics to the introduction of a helicopter emergency service.
1980s: Technological Advancements and New Services
The 1980s brought significant technological advancements to DCMH, including the introduction of CT scans and advanced laboratory services. A new oncology program was launched, providing cancer care and treatments in the local community. The hospital also expanded its offerings with the addition of a Continuing Care Center in 1988, further enhancing its ability to care for patients recovering from surgery or in need of long-term care.
1990s: Continued Growth and New Services
By the 1990s, DCMH had grown significantly, with the hospital’s revenue reaching over $1 million in 1990. A major outpatient center was completed in 1995, bringing together multiple services such as physical therapy, radiology, and outpatient surgery in one convenient location. Additionally, the hospital added new services, including a full range of imaging and diagnostic capabilities, and began to develop partnerships with other healthcare providers.
2000s: New Facilities and Collaboration
The 2000s saw another major expansion with the completion of a $1.3 million capital campaign in 2005. A 30,000 square foot addition provided a new women’s center, expanded emergency services, and improved outpatient facilities. During this period, DCMH also acquired new medical properties, including the Multi-Medical Specialty Clinic and the Wiseman office building, adding valuable space and capabilities for visiting specialists and additional healthcare services. The hospital was accredited by The Joint Commission and received funding for bioterrorism preparedness, continuing to evolve in line with new healthcare needs.
2010s: Expanding Care and Facing New Challenges
In 2013, DCMH completed a two-story, 29,460 square foot vertical expansion, which included 22 private patient rooms and a dedicated advanced care unit. The expansion also improved patient areas and introduced modern healthcare delivery systems. In 2016, the hospital opened a new Cancer Center, offering advanced care and treatments.
2020s: Excellence in Care and Innovation
As the world faced the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, DCMH stepped up to provide vital care, including virtual care visits, COVID-19 testing, and vaccinations. The hospital’s staff worked tirelessly, participating in advanced trials and supporting the community through difficult times. As DCMH continued to evolve into the 2020s, the hospital remained committed to providing high-quality care. In 2020, the hospital received a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, placing it in the top 7% of hospitals in Indiana. DCMH also earned recognition for excellence in infant and maternal health. The hospital’s ongoing efforts to improve patient outcomes, integrate new technology, and expand services reflect its dedication to the community.
