The Rehabilitation Services Patient of the Month for August 2024 is Marvin Leising. Marvin was nominated by his physical therapist, Holly Koors, and his speech-language pathologist, Heather Riga (both pictured).

After having some falls, a fractured neck, and subsequent cardiac issues, Marvin found himself being taken to St. Vincent in Indianapolis. His hospital course included an ICU stay, placement of a defibrillator, neck surgery, inpatient rehab in Indianapolis, transfer to a skilled nursing facility for further rehab, and finally landing at DCMH for outpatient services.

In Speech therapy, Marvin focused on swallowing. After having a feeding tube placed and not being able to eat by mouth for a long time, he was very motivated. Marvin and his speech pathologist, Heather, worked together to complete exercises to strengthen his swallowing ability. By the end of therapy, he has gone from eating nothing to eating his favorite foods.

Marvin also received physical therapy to improve his function after the fall due to the severity of his neck fracture. Marvin had difficulty looking straight ahead due to his injuries. Holly Koors, his physical therapist, guided him in improving his neck, core, and shoulder strength to allow more ease with daily life activities. By the end of his therapy, he could stand and look forward to eating and communicating without having to lean backward at his knees! Marvin did a great job with his therapy; the hard work paid off!

We are grateful to Marvin for choosing DCMH rehabilitation services as a crucial step in his journey to recovery. Please join us in congratulating Marvin Leising!
