In 1922, Decatur County Memorial Hospital was created to serve as a memorial to honor those who served in World War I. Over 100 years later, DCMH continues to honor Veterans and did so this Veterans Day weekend through a series of impactful events. In partnership with the American Legion Post 129, Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home, and Veterans’ Services, DCMH assisted in organizing a weekend of community activities to recognize and express gratitude for our Veterans.

On Saturday, November 8, festivities began with the ‘Walk with a Hero’ campaign, which invited local youth to participate in the annual parade alongside Veterans. Students from Greensburg Elementary, Good Shepherd Christian Academy, North Decatur Elementary, South Decatur Elementary, and St. Mary’s Catholic School were invited to foster a meaningful connection between generations and bring the community closer to those who have served.

Starting at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m., the parade proceeded to the south side of the square, where a brief ceremony took place near the flag poles. Many were in attendance to honor and show their support for those who have served and continue to serve. Following the ceremony, DCMH hosted a complimentary lunch at the American Legion Post 129, with food prepared by Snikkers and Peanuts and the Ladies Auxiliary. Attendees enjoyed a delicious meal of ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetables, and a wide variety of desserts.

As our country continues the tradition of honoring our Veterans, our community is invited to join DCMH for a moment of reflection on Tuesday, November 11, at 11:00 a.m. and to participate in a moment of silence, share messages of gratitude, or find a unique way to pay tribute to the invaluable contributions of our Veterans on their own.

“As we reflect this Veteran’s Day, the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of all who have served and continue to serve to protect our nation shall never be forgotten. We are grateful,” said Rex McKinney, President and CEO of DCMH.
