Diabetes Education Classes – November – Class 1

Diabetes can be controlled and the progression of complications delayed with an individual treatment program that includes diet, exercise, and/or medication.
Diabetes classes offered at Decatur County Memorial Hospital are designed to teach the person with diabetes and his/her family more about the disease and how to implement lifestyle changes to avoid complications. A Registered Dietitian and Pharmacist teach sessions each quarter that follow curriculum standards of the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (ADCES) Diabetes Education Accreditation Program (DEAP).
Class Topics Include:
- Overview of diabetes
- Healthy eating with a focus on: Meal planning, portion control, food and nutrient groups, restaurant eating, carbohydrate counting, and much more!
- Role of exercise in treatment
- Medications available to treat diabetes
- Blood glucose testing and monitoring
- Ways to reduce risks for short and long term complications
- Problem solving and goal setting
Each session consists of a series of three – two hour classes and registration is required to attend the classes. Classes are covered by most insurance companies. Please call your insurance company for coverage details.
