Over the past summer, Decatur County Memorial Hospital welcomed five paid college student interns into the facility to join their staff. Their job descriptions and duties ranged from maintenance to accounting/finance. DCMH’s goal was to share the importance of small details that make this hospital successful and what it means to work as a team.

Grace Dwenger is a Nursing student from Ball State who worked with the Cardiopulmonary Department. Grace said she enjoyed scheduling patients, shadowing Dr. Datta, and overall working within a department. After having this opportunity, Grace is certain she wants to work in a hospital after graduation and continue working with patients.

Kalynne Asche assisted the DCMH Human Resource department. She is a student at IUPUC studying Business Management with a minor in Psychology. The HR department was able to show her how to complete staff audits, assist with hospital events, prepare new employee paperwork, and also job shadow the Community Outreach staff. She added, “Everyone at DCMH has been so welcoming and helpful. They are fostering us students to help us learn and grow.”

Rebecca Eckstein is a Marketing student from Indiana State University. She has been working with the DCMH Marketing and Public Relations Department. Some of her achievements include assisting with the 2018 Healthy Fair event planning, data analytics, hospital press release writing, and updating department marketing literature. Becca commented, “Thank you everyone for this experience. It was reassuring knowing I am focusing on the correct career and have enjoyed learning everything I can about healthcare marketing.”

Peyton Meyer is a Finance and Real Estate student at IUPUI. He decided to work in Maintenance, a nonclinical department. Some of his work included updating equipment for several departments and participating in meetings/developments for the DCMH Master Plan. Peyton added, “I have learned so much while being here. The cool thing about an internship is learning and experiencing things outside of the classroom. Thank you to DCMH for this great opportunity.”

Aaron Moorman is an Accounting student attending Ball State University. He had the privilege of working with members of the leadership team, as well as the Accounting department. Aaron said this experience taught him how to communicate better with a variety of people, as well as grow his financial knowledge of running a business.

The students had the opportunity at the end of the summer to share their experiences with the hospital Board of Directors. President and CEO Rex McKinney added, “These interns were an essential part of our team this summer. We feel it is important to keep talent local and help students learn by allowing them hands on experience in their chosen career path. Thank you to these five students for all of your hard work.”
