Focused Care for Women at Every Stage of Life

Your health and wellness are a lifelong priority. Staying proactive with wellness and preventive screenings helps detect potential concerns early, empowering you to take control and live a healthy, vibrant life. At every stage of life, Decatur County Memorial Hospital’s (DCMH) Women’s Health team provides expert care for women, tailored to your unique needs.

In Your 20s: Laying the Foundation

For women ages 21–29, establishing healthy habits is key. Annual exams and gynecology visits are essential for maintaining reproductive health. Pelvic exams and Pap tests (every three years) are simple yet powerful ways to catch potential issues early. This is also the perfect time to discuss any questions or concerns with your provider and begin building a personalized health plan.

In Your 30s: Staying Consistent

As you enter your 30s, preventive care continues to evolve. Gynecology exams remain important, with Pap and HPV tests recommended every five years. These screenings help detect changes early, giving you the knowledge to stay ahead of potential health risks.

Your provider will work with you to create a screening schedule that fits your lifestyle while prioritizing wellness and preventive care.

In Your 40s: Expanding Your Preventative Focus

During your 40s, breast health becomes an increasingly important focus. Annual mammograms, along with pelvic exams and Pap/HPV tests, remain central to preventive care. Colon cancer screenings typically begin at age 45 and continue every 3 years or 10 years, depending on the screening type determined by your provider’s recommendation.

This decade is also an ideal time to review overall health, discuss lifestyle changes, and ensure your screening plan reflects your personal risk factors. At this stage, DCMH Women’s Health focuses on care for women, ensuring you have expert guidance to stay ahead of potential concerns.

In Your 50s and 60s: Maintaining Momentum

For women in their 50s and 60s, annual exams continue to be essential. Mammograms, pelvic exams, Pap/HPV tests, and colon cancer screenings remain part of your preventive routine.

Women with a history of smoking who meet the criteria should also consider starting annual lung cancer screenings at age 50.

Heart health becomes increasingly important; heart screenings such as cardiac CT for coronary calcium are recommended every three years starting at age 55 for women who have been diagnosed with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, have a family history of heart disease, have an inactive or high-stress lifestyle, high body mass index (BMI), smoke, or regularly exposed to second-hand smoke.

Chat with your provider about your health and history to ensure your wellness and preventive screenings are tailored to your evolving health needs.

Menopause: The Start of Another Chapter

After 65, screenings are personalized to your unique health and family history. Annual gynecology visits remain a priority, while mammograms, pelvic exams, and Pap/HPV tests may occur every one to two years. Colon cancer screenings continue every 3 years or 10 years (depending on screening type determined by your provider) until age 75, when your provider may determine you can stop, and heart and lung screenings remain options based on risk factors.

Keeping open communication with your provider ensures your preventive care plan aligns with your goals and lifestyle. Expert care for every stage of life means you’ll always have guidance and support to make informed decisions.
