Decatur County Memorial Hospital Athletic Trainer Amanda Mang has recently been nominated for the 2018-2019 Newell National Athletic Trainer of the Year Award.

In partnership with local leading orthopaedic practices, such as Southern Indiana Orthopedics in Columbus, The 2018 – 2019 Newell National Athletic Trainer of the Year Award recognizes athletic trainers for the service and leadership they provide local athletic communities. Based on examples of service, leadership and shared experiences from community members, nominees for The Newell National Athletic Trainer of the Year Award are determined regionally.

“At Southern Indiana Orthopedics, we are dedicated to keeping area student-athletes in the game, and we believe in doing all we can to keep our local sports medicine community strong,” says fellowship-trained sports medicine surgeon Dr. Eric Tannenbaum of Southern Indiana Orthopedics. “We feel very fortunate to work with such an incredible group of medical professionals, and we are excited to wish each of them the best of luck in this competition.”

Amanda Mang began as a student athletic trainer at Crown Point High School in Crown Point, IN. She now serves as an athletic trainer for both North Decatur Jr./Sr. High School and South Decatur Jr./Sr. High School in Greensburg. She received her undergraduate and graduate degrees in athletic training from Indiana State University in Terre Haute.

Amanda stated, “Athletic trainers aren’t usually in the spotlight so to bring to light the leadership, compassion, and knowledge that we share with our community is a great honor. Being nominated has been a humbling surprise and honor. I have had many people reach out to me and share how much I have meant to them, their child, or the community. I’m also very proud that Southern Indiana Orthopedics nominated me for the award, this goes to show the great relationship and communication that I have with my student athletes, DCMH, and SIO. It shows the partnership we have in our community to get our student athletes taken care of in the best way possible.”

“We feel honored to acknowledge these candidates and applaud their efforts in this community,” says Dr. Cary Guse, fellowship-trained sports medicine surgeon at Southern Indiana Orthopedics. “And we are proud to partner with The Newell Award to recognize them as the region’s—and potentially, the nation’s—top athletic trainers for the service and leadership they display while treating our community’s athletes.”
