Al Knecht was born around the Brookville area. From late grade school to early high school, his family lived in Rush County. Al met his wife Ruth and moved to Greensburg, Indiana, where they raised their five children and have been living ever since.

During a normal routine checkup with his Primary Care physician, Al was given unfortunate news. His PSA levels were not where they needed to be, so he was referred to Urology specialist, Dr. Steven Kim, in the DCMH Outpatient Clinic. Dr. Kim confirmed that it was cancer.

Al then began his regular specialty appointments, all while Dr. Kim reminding him constantly of every action that needed to be taken. Dr. Kim was right there with him every step of the way to fight this disease.

“All I can say is that I am so glad I had a doctor like Dr. Kim who knew exactly what to do and explained everything so well to me. He set up everything for me, from my radiation to all my follow-up appointments. I did not know how I was going to handle all of that. He took care of everything and put me and my family at ease.”

It was then Al was introduced to a volunteer program through the American Cancer Society, called “Road to Recovery.”

Every day thousands of cancer patients need a ride to treatment, but some may not have a way to get there. The American Cancer Society Road to Recovery program provides transportation to and from treatment for people with cancer who do not have a ride or are unable to drive themselves. This organization provided Al transportation to all of his Cancer radiation treatments.

“Right now, my cancer is in remission and I have had a good read on my recent PSA count. I know that I still have follow-up appointments with Dr. Kim, as well as treatments he would like me to do. Every time I have seen him, he explains everything so well and makes me feel more comfortable through this whole process. He is a very supportive and very helpful physician here.”

When asked why Al feels this hospital is so important to this community, he paused and said, “Well, what would I have done without them? I do not know what I would do or if I would still be here.”

Daughter-in-law Shelly Knecht commented and said, “It was nice to have all of the services here at the hospital. We did not have to worry about where he was going and if he was getting the proper care. I think having the specialists that DCMH has here and the family practice doctors trusting them with their patients says a lot. It not only made Al feel more comfortable, but the whole family as well, knowing everything was close to home.”

Al added, “All I can say now is thank you. Thank you for everything you have done for me and my family. Yeah it has been tough, but it was great having the support of my family and even more, this hospital. It is so good to know that the help is here when you need it.”
